October 26:
Heading out tomorrow for Amsterdam. We are doing a Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary. We spend most of the time in Germany and a couple days in Vienna, Austria. We also added an extension to Prague, Czech Republic (by bus). Over the moon excited!
The second picture is our upgraded stateroom, a “French Balcony” stateroom (bigger windows). When I booked the tour the salesperson said that the lowest priced staterooms were sold out so we might get an upgrade. We did!
The Danube is low. We were changed to a different ship because of it. Hoping it rains on the Danube before we get there, or we could potentially have a ship swap or some other accommodation to the low water level. November is their rainy month. We’ll see. May have to hide out in a castle or cathedral or even sacrifice and find a bakery or two if it’s rainy.
We will post lots of pictures. Stay tuned.
October 27:
Our trip has now become way more adventurous. United cancelled our flight. We would have been fine flying across the Atlantic but landing might have been a little dicey.
We are now traveling on Lufthansa and visiting Munich before getting into Amsterdam an hour AFTER our boat leaves for Kinderjik, Netherlands, about 66 miles away. Viking will meet us in Amsterdam and transfer us! Yeah!
We met another couple also going on our Viking Cruise waiting at the same gate. They weren’t able to get on the same flight so they will arrive an hour later. So, eventually we will get there. Hopefully our baggage will too!Here in the woodshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16349268495812171000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3209263368809354309.post-21911999679949393682018-11-09T07:40:00.002-08:002019-12-10T11:42:56.148-08:00The Midland Texas area<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 14px;">
We left Palo Duro Canyon reluctantly as we had a reservation for another night. We decided that with the 20 degree temperatures expected we had two choices, winterize the camper by shutting down the water system or continue south. I picked Midland TX as a destination since they had a FedEx ship center where I could pick up a delivery.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Before we left we did laundry in the little town of Canyon. I had a few items for our purchase of the van that I needed to print. So while we were doing the laundry I pulled the printer out of the car, found a plug and printed documents. I’m sure that was the most novel activity that the locals had experienced but they didn’t seem very curious about it!

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I researched RV campgrounds and found one outside of the town of Big Springs. I had tried several by phone and finally found a vacancy at the “Whip In” right alongside of the busy freeway. When we got to the Midland area I found out why the RV spots were full, the area is a boom town for the fracking industry and there is very little housing available for workers. Many of them live full time in their RV’s. Our RV was sandwiched in between two other RV’s. We had about four feet on either side. And compounding that, the two-day shipping isn’t really two day, the countdown doesn’t start on the date of pick up, nor does it include Saturday.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The area was an interesting mixture, businesses everywhere to support the oil industry, an oil refinery across the road and a big plateau overlooking the area that has a huge wind farm on it. A land of contrasts.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
However, on the plus side, we saw sun! It was actually quite warm the first couple of days and we took the dogs on a short hike on a nature trail at the Big Springs state park in town. I caught a picture of a road runner. It was also nice to have info signs explaining the trees, shrubs and cactus. The town also has a very nicely landscaped area around the big spring that the town is named after.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
We decided to go see a movie that night. It was a novel experience! They warned us that the air conditioner was broken in the theater. It wasn’t broken in the “off” position. It was constantly “on” and the temperature in the theater was about 50 degrees! I had thrown my usual light jacket in the car. Dave had his rain jacket. We could have used winter jackets!

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
And yes I do remember the movie, but I didn’t like it. A Star is Born, hard to watch someone drink himself to death and wonder what in the heck the woman saw in him except for a chance to punish herself with his drinking. That isn’t a strong woman lead role model, in my opinion.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
And then, with our usual weather related luck, the air turned cold and windy and it settled in to rain. This was a product of the aftermath of hurricane Sergio. We picked up our paperwork signed it, sent it back in and drove out of town under glowering skies, (with many thanks to our friends Bob and Barb who helped us by taking the car to the dealer to close out the lease and prepare it for the purchase).

I’m sorry for being so delayed on my write ups of our travels. Doing more living than writing. When I last wrote we were in Missouri. We left Missouri on October 4th and started heading in a southerly direction since the long range forecasts were were for cold overnights. We could see a massive rain system hanging over the center of the country and hoped we could avoid some of it. Not to be! We drove through Kansas and the Flint Hills area, a stark beautiful grasslands. We camped over night at a Army Corps of Engineers campground on the Pomona Reservoir. We managed to set up during a break between rainstorms abut it rained all night. I had developed a cold while I was in Missouri and like most illnesses, it seemed worse at night so one night in Missouri and the night at Pomona I went to be really early in the evening. That seemed to help the cold move out of my system although it took a week to be fully gone. I felt like I couldn’t complain too much as I only get colds about once every five years so I was probably overdue for one.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The following day was again cold and rain. It was a pouring rain, not a light rainstorm. We just couldn’t seem to catch a break on the weather. The clouds were low and not moving. I just could not bear the thought of trying to set up the camper in the cold so I looked ahead and found a La Quinta in Dodge City KS. We like the La Quinta chain since they don’t charge extra for dogs. Oh HOW NICE to be tucked up warm and dry in a motel that night as I still felt a bit punky with my cold.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The following day we made a decision to forgo our reservation at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was clear that the rain in the higher elevations was turning to snow. We had hoped to see some of the National Parks in Utah such as Grand Staircase Escalante and Zion but we decided that driving through the Colorado mountains in rain turning to sleet/snow towing a trailer was foolhardy.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
We also decided to buy our second car, our van, from the Chrysler lease program. We knew that would add a level of complexity and the need to be able to spend a few days somewhere where it wasn’t going to freeze at night to get a FedEx delivery of paperwork. Our need to stay above freezing came as we traveled. Although we left Michigan thinking that we might like to try “boondocking” without water and electric, we realized that we like having our own shower and bathroom facilities. And with the nightly temperatures hovering in the high to mid thirties, the heater and fan comes on frequently. If we were relying on battery power, the fan would drain the battery quickly. So all in all, with our frequent moves, we decided to head south faster, though Texas. Our next plan became Amarillo TX as there was a FedEx shipping center there. The rain continued, dreary and drenching. Again a La Quinta was available and a welcome respite.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Hurrah! The following morning was…wait for it…SUNNY! Although a bit cold and windy, I still felt a mood lift. That is until Dave came in to report that we had a flat tire on the trailer. Ah well, minor inconvenience since we had a complimentary membership in Good Sam road emergency service. So we called and the service was scheduled.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Next bad news, Dave came in and said that he couldn’t get the power jack to work. I was busy with the dogs so I didn’t got immediately to look at it but he came back to me and told me that he had pushed the button the wrong way and essentially had been trying to raise the jack instead of lowering it. So I went over to push the button to lower the jack. All of a sudden there was a horrible grinding noise and the power jack didn’t move at all. I tried calling Good Sam, but our roadside assistance only covered things that meant we couldn’t travel, not hitches frozen up. I then called an RV repair dealer. He said that he was booked up the following day, a Thursday but could probably do it on Friday. But, he said he didn’t want to mess around with warranty work, he wanted payment outright. He did say that grinding the hitch upwards when it was meant to go down would probably not be covered since that probably resulted in a shear pin breaking or gear teeth breaking which is probably what froze the hitch. So, I said that would be fine. We could take the hitch with us and try to file a claim, or more likely, just give him the hitch.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Near Amarillo is a canyon, Palo Duro Canyon. There is a Texas state campground at the bottom of the canyon. The information I found online said that the canyon is second in size only to the Grand Canyon. So, the problem became, how can we go camp in that beautiful canyon without a jack to take the camper off the vehicle? Well, the answer is, we go to Home Depot to buy a scissors jack to raise the camper off the hitch on the car. We traveled down into the canyon which was breathtakingly beautiful, sandstone colored cliffs, a Grand Canyon-like surprise since I didn’t even know that canyon existed until the previous night when I saw some tourism information at the motel. We got a site, used the scissors jack to remove the camper from the truck but realized that the scissors jack didn’t stabilize the camper very well and in my research online, we found out the corner jacks on the camper aren’t designed to take the whole weight of the camper. So, our next decision became, we needed to go back to Home Depot and buy a heavy duty bottle jack that could take the place of the power jack and hold some of the weight of the camper during the days we were camped. We did this and finally returned to the campsite (after dark), leveled and stabilized the camper and had a frozen microwaved dinner.

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The next day we planned to drive the canyon road. The canyon staff had posted a sign the previous day that all the hiking trails in the canyon were closed until they dried out. The excessive rain had created clay mud and washed quite a lot of sand into the roadways, although we could see that they had cleared out the “washes” on the roadways. We stopped at a couple of the trailheads and could see no signs saying that the trails were closed and there were quite a few cars at one of the trailhead hubs. Se we concluded that they must have opened up the trails and they were dry enough to hike on. We started out on a Lighthouse Rock hike. Neither of us had hiking boots on but the trail surface seemed dry, although rocky. We hiked only about half the trail (I later saw a picture of the Lighthouse Rock and regretted that we hadn’t hiked the full way. However we really weren’t prepared for hiking, didn’t have much water with us or good boots). The air was cool and it remained cloudy but it was colorful with some of the stripes in the rock a deep cranberry red color. We walked around several folds in the sidewalls and of course took a surfeit of photos!

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
The following day found us up early in the morning to use the jacks to raise the camper off the bottle hitch and put it back on the truck. Not easy or straightforward because the scissors jack is on wheels and not really designed for the weight of the camper. However, the bottle jack didn’t extend a high as we needed because we hadn’t put it on many blocks to stabilize the camper. So there were a few tense moments, but in the end we succeeded and we were able to drive to the camper repair and have the jack replaced. I found out some bad news while waiting that the cold weather was expected to descend the following night, with temperatures in the 20’s. So again we decided to go further south. Our paperwork could be shipped to us in Midland TX where we would wait a few days for it to be delivered.

Missouri

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
My apologies for the long delay in adding to my narrative. From October 3 through 6th we camped in a campground called the Katy Roundhouse in Franklin, MO. This is a campground that is on the Katy Trail which is a 200+ mile trail that once was a railroad. The trail is now limestone surfaced for biking and hiking. The campground is the old switching yard; roundhouse although the equipment is buried in the weeds behind a fence.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
My interest in being in this area is that my great great (and great great great) paternal grandparents lived in Boonville, 3 miles from New Franklin. This is my first time visiting an area where my ancestors lived and it was interesting to think that they probably rode the original railway and were very familiar with that switching yard.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I found out in my admittedly amateur research online that my great great grandfather Philip Back was murdered in Boonville in 1874. He owned a tavern and was found in a cistern. The newspaper article described the setting as a “locked door” mystery. It said that he was found inside the cistern which was inside his tavern and the doors and windows were locked from the inside. I hoped that I could find out more information by visiting the Missouri Historical Society and look through the newspaper collection on microfiche. On Friday, October 5th I visited the historical collection and spent several hours looking through the collection of the newspapers from that time period. I found two references to his murder but nothing later to explain whether anyone was ever caught for the crime. The only newspaper I wasn’t able to investigate is a newspaper that was written in German, the “Central Missourier”. It’s quite possible that paper had more information but I don’t read German. I did scan them to see if I saw the name “Back” but with the dense text nothing was noticeable. So the mystery of his death is still there, although I saw a write up by someone that some thieves were later arrested for the crime but there was no source for that information listed.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
However there are three graveyards in Boonville and I knew from “Find a Grave” website that many of my relatives have headstones. I found the Diringer and Meisburger great-grandparents’ gravestones and several Back relatives (great great grandfather and mother Philip and Barbara Back) and my great uncle Ernst. I was able to speak with the caretaker at the Walnut Grove Protestant cemetery and found out that Ernst bought the gravesite in 1900 when Barbara (his mother) died. He re-interred his father, Philip at that time. Previously when he was murdered the newspaper account said that he was buried at the Sunset Hills cemetery that was called the city cemetery. We then went to Sunset Hills cemetery and I was able to find the burial stone for my great great great grandparents Paul and Mary Stegner. The picture from Find a Grave was very helpful in locating it because I could see the fence in the photo. Otherwise I could have been looking for quite awhile as the cemetery is several acres spread over a large hill. It is a picturesque and peaceful site. Next to the Stegner gravesite is one for Sophia Vollrath which is Mary’s maiden name so it may be a 3X great aunt. She is listed in a German census with Mary, although I need to investigate that further as the column headings are in German.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
We also toured the Old Cooper County jail and "Hanging barn". http://freindsofhistoricboonvillemo.org/?page_id=128 It was in use up until 1978! It was an ancient jail with raw iron doors and damp limestone walls. The county continued to use it until a lawsuit forced them to close it. The jail was the site of several hangings. I had also hoped to find out the outcome of a “citizen’s arrest” that my great grandfather made of a man who raped a pregnant woman (she later died). The news articles I found said that a mob was after the rapist who was moved to a larger town nearby. The last article I found interviewed a mob member who said that the man, Sam Johnson, wouldn’t survive long enough to come to trial. It’s no wonder that William, my great grandfather, decided to move with his wife to Illinois to start his family there. He later moved to Red Wing MN. My branch of the family moved to Minneapolis which is where I was born.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Several early battles of the Civil War were fought in Boonville. One of the historical signs said that the war progress was affected by the early battles in Boonville as an important supply of armaments was maintained under Union control and the governor of Missouri who was a secessionist was hounded out of town. My relatives joined the Union army the earliest day that they could join. Before that, assumably, they were part of the “Home Guard”, unpaid soldiers on the Union side.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Our last stop on the way out of Missouri was the little town of Bunceton. The train depot is still there along with a train engine. (See pictures) My great grandmother, who became Anna Back (born “ Annie” Meisburger) lived in Bunceton. She apparently knew the Back family very well. My sister had a small album for signatures that she showed me while I was in Minnesota before traveling through Missouri. On one page Annie’s future sister in law, Emma Back, teases Annie about how Willie (William) is glad for “Bunceton station”. He apparently went to Bunceton to court Annie. I’m not sure where they met, perhaps they lived in Boonville and then moved to Bunceton. It will be good to look again at census records as prior to seeing this signature book I had no idea the Meisburger family lived in Bunceton.

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
While we were in Missouri we met one of the riders from our southern Coast to Coast tour. Marla met us in Columbia for lunch. She lives in St. Louis. We had met Cecil in Iowa, he is also a rider from our Coast to Coast tour. Fun to have reunions with them!

<div style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Unfortunately, we didn’t ride on the Katy trail at all. The weather continued to be often rainy and mostly fairly cold (in the 40’s) although we had two freakish days of high 80 degrees which plunged again into 40’s. We did visit Rocheport on a day when it was partly cloudy and managed to walk for a little more than an hour to see the high bluffs near the town and climb to an overlook over a former train tunnel. However, by the end of our walk the rain started again. We saw several groups of riders. They were managing to avoid most of the rain by starting later in the day but we saw one group that started so late they were riding in the dark to get to the campground. Both groups had not heard from the Katy Roundhouse owners so we told them the code for the bathrooms. The campground was really strange in that in the four days we were there we never saw the owners or anyone managing the place. They appear to operate it completely on the honor system, at least during the off season. They also had recently flushed their water system with bleach. It was quite undrinkable, at least to our taste, so we bought a jug of water for cooking and drinking.

We have had cold weather (high 40’s and low 50’s) ever since we left Michigan on September 19. For some inexplicable reason, today it is 89 degrees with a strong south wind. It makes the driving difficult for Dave, especially since the road doesn’t always go due south. We also had a period of bad road surface. I’m not sure what caused it but it made the truck bob. We are quite sure it was the road because when we got off the U.S Highway and onto a tiny county road, the bobbing stopped. Now that we are in Missouri we are back on U.S. 63 and it’s fine.
We were in Minnesota visiting my family from September 21 through October 1. Then we headed down to Des Moines, Iowa and camped at an campground run by the Army Corps of Engineers on the Saylorville Resevoir near Ankeny, Iowa. There we were able to connect with Cecil, one of the riders we got to know on our Coast to Coast southern bike trip in 2015. Cecil showed us the High Trestle Trail bridge. The Des Moines area has a great network of paved bike trails. Our plan for the day was to bike on the High Trestle trail to see the biking bridge. http://www.inhf.org/what-we-do/protection/high-trestle-trail/
The High Trestle Trail bridge is unique. It is a half mile long and has arches built to be representative of the coal mines that used to be in the Des Moines area. I would like to see it at night at some future time. This trip it was too cold and misty to really want to go out in the late evening to bike to the bridge. It is a distance of about 2 1/2 to 3 miles from the little town of Madrid (pronounced “Maa drid” with the accent on Maa). Cecil was a great host in showing us the area.
During our ride we saw some great big flocks of white pelicans from the High Trestle Trail Bridge high (13 stories high) over the Des Moines river! They were flying in a formation called a “kettle”. It was difficult to get a photo of the immensity of the size of the kettle, there were easily 25 or more birds in each of the kettles we saw and a hundred in the flock hanging out on the shoreline. One informational sign I saw said the Upper part of the dammed Saylorville reservoir is a globally important bird habitat.
Now we are heading down to an RV park near the Katy Trail. We plan to stay in the Boonville MO area for several days. I am interested in seeing the area especially because my paternal Great Great grandparents came to this area from Alsace Lorraine France and Germany in the mid 1800’s. I also hope to find out more information about my Great great grandfather’s murder in 1874. There is a larger town nearby (Columbia) that has some newspapers on microfiche from that era. As well, there are cemeteries and headstones in Boonville. I’ll let you know what I find.
It is really great to camp on the Katy rail trail and have a sense that my ancestors rode on the train that went right by our campsite. We had a nice sunset that I could see through the trees. Although my picture doesn't look too impressive it seems like I haven't seen the sun in weeks!
Everything was "our last". Even though I didn't want to think that way, it seemed to creep in. I woke up without the alarm at 5:30 and went to the other room for coffee. The other early coffee drinkers were there. We were all wearing our Coast to Coast jerseys together for the first time. When we left the Pacific Coast we didn't wear them because one jersey had mistakenly not been ordered. One jersey looked different though. Hmm. Rich, (who has an understated sense of humor) only halfway got the message that we were wearing the jerseys. Well, I guess it wasn't spelled out...

A wood stork flew overhead and landed in a tree in front of us. He stayed there while I took pictures of him and when other riders rode by and Alan stopped to get a picture. Alan is a Forest Service person and is always interested in outdoors flora and fauna. He said when he heard me say "endangered species" he wanted to see the bird. I wanted to just bask in the knowledge that we were so close. It seemed like time was moving too fast for me.

We headed over the Stone Lions bridge and headed to a McDonald's on A1A. And then we waited. It turned out that Captain Don, who was going to head up our parade of riders down to the beach had missed the turn....

Staff drove after our leader and brought him back. We gathered for some pictures at the "Welcome to Saint Augustine" sign with our flags from the five countries represented on the tour. Ed honked his horn at every car we passed and people sitting outdoors at the restaurants we passed were cheering. Quite a hoopla, but it was fun.

We reached the hotel and people who had friends and family saw them outside with cameras and signs.

We went through the front door and out the back door and out to the beach. The funniest part of that was an enterprising young man who was renting beach chairs and shouting "aww you don't want to drag your bikes all the way down there. You're tired! You just rode your bikes a long way. We cleaned off the sand from our bike tires using the outdoor shower. We ourselves took showers and headed to a restaurant across the street. The next few hours also went quickly. After dinner we gathered in the breakfast area for some tongue in cheek awards (Cecil, the most flats). We also received plaques with a picture of us on them and said a few words. I think mine were a bleh bleh since words escaped completely out of my head. Dave reacted by sleeping a lot. I felt too keyed up to sleep and felt I couldn't settle the experience enough in my mind to blog about it. I went in and out of the lobby, wanting to talk to some of the folks that were still around, but not wanting to say goodbye either. Dave and I finally got a taxi and went to a movie just to immerse ourselves in something that wasn't too emotionally demanding. Today (Wednesday) I feel a little more together, not so scattered.

Also of note was the fact that on Monday, in the midst of all the celebrating, when Dave picked up the car from where it had been stored, he had a hard time getting the brakes to work and they shuddered violently. It turned out that they had rusted terribly in the warm salt air. The following day we got it to the dealer for a brake job which delayed our return home by a day. Not too terribly sad about that since spring has been very slow in northern Michigan. So we're unwinding in Florida for an extra day.

Here in the woodshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16349268495812171000noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3209263368809354309.post-11493043275783425552015-04-26T18:45:00.001-07:002015-04-29T07:21:22.516-07:002nd to last day (Revised)
Sunday, April 26 O'Leno State Park to Palatka, FL

Dave and Loren, 84 miles

During our rest day we had another casualty of the trip. This one was also not bike related. Beth got up to head for the bathroom/shower house in the middle of the night and missed the steps down from the cabin. She had two very sore ankles. She was able to bear weight on one, but not on the other. Her roommates helped her back into the cabin and in the morning she went to the hospital. The diagnosis was that her ankle bone was cracked and the other has probable torn ligaments and a severe sprain. She was able to walk slowly with crutches. Her broken ankle was actually less sore than her other ankle. She has decided to stay with the tour but her bicycling is over for the time being. A couple of the riders will take her home with her car and then continue home in another car.
On Sunday Dave remembered to attend the last devotional. I had programed it into my phone with a reminder. It reminded me, at 7 am which was the eastern time zone equivalent of the 6 am central time reminder in my calendar. I'll have to remember to un-smart my calendar if I cross time zones!
The day started out with cloudy skies. The air was very humid and sticky so I was hoping it would stay cloudy. We biked on nice shoulders and then got into Gainesville under a tunnel of huge live oaks in an area of ranches. (1st photo). We got to our SAG stop in a Starbucks and stopped for a snack. While we were there we had a cloudburst where it just poured. Since we were indoors we sat and waited it out. Other riders were not so lucky, but they found shelter in various areas, gas stations, etc. and waited it out. After about 20 minutes or so the rain stopped. We continued on our way and got on a very nice bike path that runs from Gainesville to Hawthorne, a distance of about 20 miles. At one point on our route sheet it told us to take the left fork of a Y that wouldn't be marked. We came to what looked like a Y (although not at the right mileage point) and were a little confused and asked a trio of guys about the turn. They told us it was further on and we talked a bit about our tour. The person that seemed to know the most about the trail had Harley paraphernilia on, so it seemed a little strange to see him on a bicycle.
By this time the sun had come out. We continued on the bike path which was shady and we knew it was much cooler in the tunnel of trees than the road would be. The trail goes through a state park, the San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park. There is also a spur trail that leads to the Payne's Prairie state park that we stayed at a few years ago. There were some phenomenal live oaks with Spanish moss in the state park. There were a few of those ancient oaks on the trail too.
We came out at Hawthorne and found a SAG stop waiting for us. I really like this aspect of a supported trip. I drank down an entire bottle of a water Gatorade mix. I had been pushing myself to take lots of sips of water on the bike, but it doesn't taste very good lukewarm. I also poured some over my head in a futile attempt to get cooler. It was too humid to evaporate very much.
Then we went out on the road. Even though we are creating a breeze for ourselves the asphalt absorbs the heat and reflects it back. We had a good tailwind but the only negative effect of a tailwind is that you go as fast as the wind so you don't feel a cooling effect. We had some rolling hills and I did feel some breeze coming down the hills. By the time we got to Interlaken I was sweltering. We stopped at the first place we came to and found Don and "Coach" sheltering from the heat. They were concerned about my overly red face. I drank a big glass of water and iced some pulse points in my neck and felt much better. The problem with being a slower rider is that we are out in the afternoon sun much longer than a faster rider. So that makes us better at endurance, right?? Anyway once we got started again it felt a little cooler. Maybe the sun had passed its zenith.
We got in just before dinner. We spent the time after dinner in a series of reminisces with the whole group and staff. Graham (from the UK) reduced me to hysterical laughter as he recounted several episodes. One of them involved our hilarious-in-retrospect night at the hurricane evacuation shelter where most of the lights are wired to be permanently on. Graham went to the kitchen and slept with his head under the sink. He woke up in the middle of the night thinking that his life had come to a new low as he gazed on the plumbing from underneath. He also told of an incident where in his groggy early morning state of mind (complete with sound effects of all the zippers on tents as other Coasters got up) he brushed his teeth with what he thought was toothpaste but instead turned out to be "butt paste". He warned all those that are keeping blogs that he'd better not see it on the Internet. Rich told him that he had just uploaded it to YouTube! By then Marianne and I were in tears from laughing so hard (as were several others).
Then it was off to bed and lights out at 9 PM as is usual on this tour. I was afraid that I'd be too keyed up to sleep on our last night, but I fell asleep quickly. I did notice that during the night Dave shifted positions frequently. He is having more shoulder pain again. He's an orthopedic doc's dream patient. We have specialty clinic near us with a different doc for every joint. Dave could use three of them. Hip, knees and shoulder.
We are very proud to have come this far. We are both happy to being close to being done but sad too.

Madison to High Springs, FL
The route was less hilly and more countryside. We said goodbye to US 90 and got onto lightly traveled country roads. Since they were smaller roads, on some of them we could bike in the shade cast by huge live oaks. There were a lot of big horse farms and cattle farms along the way.

We stopped for lunch at Bob's Butts for lunch. First time I've had a pulled pork salad. Then as been happening frequently on this trip, the sheer number of the riders using the bathroom seemed to affect their septic. We were the last riders out of there and when I left the waitress was using the plunger...

Our overnight and rest day is at O'Leno State Park. It is a beautiful park with huge live oaks and a river that disappears! Yes, there are so many underground limestone sink holes that the river actually goes underground for three miles.

Saturday April 25, Rest Day. We paddled the Santa Fe River. This is the same river that disappears, although we were downstream. We paddled an area of the river that has springs. They are fresh coldwater springs. At every springs lots of people were swimming. We saw many turtles, no alligators though.

Our route continues to be on 90 with nice shoulders. The surprise was how hilly it became during the afternoon. Tallahassee was especially hilly. Bubba routed us through the city on a zigzag path to avoid the worst of the traffic. The busy roads that we did have to take had bike paths. Now that the weather has cleared up it gets quite hot in the afternoon; it was 86. I found myself getting a little woozy and I realized that I had not been drinking enough. I forced myself to drink a full bottle of water and a Gatorade and that got me to the motel. It was great to just step into the shower rather than having to walk over to a shower house and try to keep clean cLothes dry and dirty clothes together while trying to dry off and get dressed standing on one leg. Why? Invariably there isn't a chair or bench to put clothes on and the water jets out into the changing area (if there is one)which leaves the floor all wet. That's problematic when trying to put pants on. Ah, but I'll miss it when it's done...

April 23, Thursday, Dave and Loren 48 miles.
Today was nice and short. We stopped in Greenville which is Ray Charles birthplace. It has a nice bronze statue of him so we all had our pictures taken there. Our destination town has a nice community college where we are overnighting in the gym. Bubba had a woman who knew Ray Charles come and talk about his early life, but also how she put herself through college and got a Master's degree while raising 5 children. Determination. She advised us to use the same determination to get up the hills!
Tomorrow a 77 mile route to High Springs and then a rest day at O'Leno Sate Park. We only have three more biking days left!
Nice to listen to music outdoors. The rainy weather has finally moved away.
Our ride today was again on U.S.90. The road is smooth with great shoulders. The nice surface doesn't make for an interesting blog but it sure makes great riding. At lunch today in the little town of Chipley I saw a couple of DOT workers and told them how much I liked the road especially compared to the same road in Texas. Later we drove by the DOT offices. I suppose they would have thought me weird if I had gone in and told them how much I like the smooth shoulder but it would be nice to tell the decision makers how much we appreciate the added expenses that these type of roads take. The Florida drivers seem mostly respectful although the other day I had a twenty-something move in on me until I shouted at her. Dave said that he could see that she was texting.
Another rider posted his GPS reading that we have done 2600 miles. I figure I may have missed about 600 miles nursing my leg. I haven't figured it out exactly and my odometer seems to be overstating our miles each day but we've probably both ridden 2000 miles.
We've had better luck with dogs recently. No riders have had close encounters like we did in LA and AL. I have started wearing a whistle around my neck. My close encounter with a dog happened while I was leaving the RV park this morning. A woman had a schnauzer on a retractable leash which ran at me. She cooed to him "oh come here sweetie" while the thing was snarling at my ankles and she didn't use the stop button on the leash to keep him close to her. But I outran it and didn't look back to see if she was pulled off her feet by him. I have never met a schnauzer that was pleasant even though I usually think there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.
We rode through a couple of areas with overflowing rivers. Luckily a high pressure system has come in, lessening the humidity dramatically. Unfortunately it has led to snow at home but we sure appreciate it. It was actually chilly last night and we both pulled out our down sleeping bags.
Well, heading to bed. Tomorrow we lose an hour about halfway through the route to Tallahassee. We will be on Eastern time again. We have been in the Central time zone since Van Horn TX.

It was so loud that I didn't hear the alarm go off at 5:30 am. We had placed all our gear in plastic bags in our luggage which turned out to be a good thing since the tent had a lake in front of it when the rain finally lessened and we emerged.
As soon as breakfast was done we packed up and went across the street to catch the ferry. And again the sky opened up again and it poured. I had my seat cushion under my rain jacket to try to keep it dry.

This weather system has been producing storms one after another and the landscape shows it. However, much to our surprise, the rain held off for us for the rest of the day. By the time we got to the outskirts of Pensacola the sun came out. What a change! Steamy.

Pensacola had a nice bike lane through most of the town. We rode on a scenic area of bluffs overlooking Pensacola Bay and then ended up on U.S. 90 East. What a difference from the chip seal, random shoulders and disappearing blacktop that we had in the west on 90. In Florida it is smooth with mostly great shoulders and a smooth rolled surface. Nice riding! We rolled into the KOA just before dinner. After dinner I took a fast shower, made it back in time for the route meeting and went to bed.

Monday Milton to Defuniak Springs, FL Loren and Dave 54 miles.

Dave had an amusing incident (to me, not to him). Marla warned us to check the light timer when we went into the individual combo shower and restroom as Cecil had the lights go dark in the middle of his shower. Dave said to me that he was going to remember to check the timer as he left me. However he forgot. The timer ran out after he took off his clothes. He couldn't see anything so he felt around the wall near the door where one would usually find a light switch. When he didn't find it, he opened the door slightly and asked Dwan if he knew where the switch was. Dean opened the door and went in, and the normally un-shy Dave was quite aware of the women that were outside on the deck waiting their turns in the bathroom.They finally found the light switch hiding under his clothes that were hanging on the towel rack. Who says a supported tour doesn't have hardships!

Milton to Defuniak Springs, FL

Loren and Dave 54 miles

Not much to say about the route today. Another day of expecting rain but instead we had just cloudiness which kept it cool and pleasant. This was in spite of the weather forecast of 100% chance of rain. With this stormy weather we have all become compulsive readers of weather forecasts. We compare forecasts and choose the ones that sound most favorable. And then the weather does what it wishes. And mostly it has been in our favor (cross our fingers).

Our shorter day felt easy. There were some rolling hills occasionally but that kept it from being boring. The area looks mostly forested with occasional cattle ranches so not highly scenic but it feels good to be riding

We are at a nice RV park. The RVers are in shock at seeing a tent city arise in their midst. Many of them wandered over to ask about our tour.

We had time to air out the tent, dry the floor and dry out the wet clothes. We don't wear a lot of rain gear, maybe a jacket, because the air and rain are warm. The air temp has been in the 70's. Now let's hope it stays dry so we don't have to do it all over again.

A home that we passed on the bluffs of Pensacola. We woke up to wet pavement but it wasn't actively raining. We headed out into a weak sunshine. Because it was so humid I needed to take my sunglasses off because they fogged up on me.
The route was flatter than yesterday which was good for us. This was our first long day we were able to ride together since our various injuries started acting up.
We went over the Pascagoula River and along a delta of the river which was swollen to flood stage. The Passagoula River is the largest (by volume) undammed river in the 48 states. I saw three campgrounds that were under water! We were worried about our destination, Dauphin Island, which is low lying and looked like it was receiving torrents of rain.

We stopped for a picture at the Alabama state line.

You haven't lived until you are riding down a hill at 22 mph with raindrops pelting your eyeballs! My Coast to Coast Tyvek raincoat actually seems to do better at not getting all wet inside of it than my Goretex but it balloons out like a Pillsbury dough boy since the air runs up my sleeves in my recumbent position. Water also collects by my elbows so I would have to empty them out periodically!

We stopped at a gas station for subs.
